A Heritage Icon, Electrified

The Electric Series II Land Rover marks one of Silent Savannah’s earliest electric vehicle conversions in Kenya - a pioneering project that combined timeless design with modern sustainability. This 1958 Land Rover retains its classic Series II character while running entirely on electric power, representing a bridge between traditional engineering and Africa’s renewable future.

The project demonstrated how heritage vehicles can be reimagined for clean, efficient transport without compromising their authenticity.

Completed in collaboration with Foleys East Africa, this conversion showcases the depth of local expertise behind Silent Savannah’s early projects.

Together, we replaced the original diesel engine with a NetGain HyperHV 144 V AC motor powered by a 41 kWh lithium-ion battery, providing a range of over 100 kilometres per charge. The vehicle retains its full 4x4 functionality through the original gearbox and transfer case and features power-assisted electric braking. Seating up to seven passengers, the Series II delivers the same capability as its combustion counterpart - only now in complete silence and with zero emissions.

Paving the Way for Electric Innovation in Africa

While the Electric Series II Land Rover is not a safari vehicle, it played a key role in shaping Silent Savannah’s path toward developing electric safari vehicles and solar electric vehicle charging systems across East Africa.

This build proved the potential of converting existing vehicles to electric power using local skill, reliable components, and practical design.

It stands as a milestone in Kenya’s growing EV landscape - a symbol of how innovation and heritage can drive a sustainable future for African transport.
